Mazda TREEmendous Event at Aparima College
TREEmendous is a joint initiative between the Mazda Foundation and Project Crimson. Launched in 2007, the initiative aims to encourage environmental education in schools and highlight the importance of caring for the environment both to children and to the wider community.
Each year New Zealand primary or intermediate schools can apply to have an area of their grounds developed. Ten finalists are chosen, with four schools winning the $10,000 TREEmendous Event and the six runners up receiving $500 each.
Aparima College plan to revamp an area of their school grounds over the next few years. The funding from the TREEmendous team went towards implementing the first phase of this plan. Having already removed some very large macrocarpas, they planted some natives during their event to provide shelter and reduce the impact of wind and soil erosion.
They have also created a propagation area to raise seedlings which will be planted next year. In addition to planting lots of natives, the school will plant a heritage fruit orchard, complete with rabbit-proof fencing, and are going to create an outdoor classroom.
Over the years we have been lucky enough to have been involved with several of these make overs throughout Central Otago and Southland and our staff have enjoyed the opportunity to give back by volunteering time for our local community.
